Synopsis

Nicknamed “Lady Day“, Billie Holiday was extremely influential in jazz music and pop singing. She was known for her vocal delivery and improvisational skills. Her song ‘Strange Fruit’ is sadly still relevant after eight decades, providing fuel for the Black Lives Matter movement. Based on a poem about lynching by Abel Meeropol, the song reminded Holiday of the death of her father: “I have to keep singing it, not only because people ask for it, but because twenty years after Pop died, the things that killed him are still happening in the South“.
Suffering from substance abuse, Billie Holiday died on July 17, 1959, at only 44 years old. This music is her rich legacy.
